Description

About DHT11 Temperature and Humidity Sensor Module

The DHT11 temperature and humidity sensor module is a low-cost, factory-calibrated digital sensor that measures ambient temperature and relative humidity. It sends its readings over a single-wire digital signal, so you only need one GPIO pin on your microcontroller.

The module version includes an onboard pull-up resistor and a 3-pin header, so you can connect it directly to an Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266 or Raspberry Pi without extra components. It’s one of the most popular sensors for beginners, students and IoT projects such as weather stations, smart home climate monitoring and room automation.

Key Features

  • Measures both temperature and relative humidity
  • Single-wire digital output – only 1 data pin required
  • Factory calibrated – no calibration needed
  • Onboard pull-up resistor on the module
  • Wide supply range: 3.3V to 5.5V
  • Low power consumption
  • Easy to use with ready-made Arduino and ESP32 libraries

Specifications

Sensor DHT11
Operating Voltage 3.3V – 5.5V DC
Output Single-wire digital signal
Temperature Range 0°C to 50°C
Temperature Accuracy ±2°C
Temperature Resolution 1°C
Humidity Range 20% to 90% RH
Humidity Accuracy ±5% RH
Humidity Resolution 1% RH
Sampling Rate 1 reading every 1–2 seconds (max 1 Hz)
Measuring Current 0.3 mA (typical)
Pins 3 (VCC, DATA, GND)

Pin Definition

VCC Power supply (3.3V – 5.5V)
DATA Digital data output – connect to any GPIO
GND Ground

Note: Pin order can vary between module batches. Always check the labels printed on the PCB before wiring.

Usage Tips

  • Wait at least 1 second after power-up before taking the first reading.
  • Read the sensor no faster than once every 1–2 seconds. Faster reads return errors or stale values.
  • Keep the sensor away from heat sources such as voltage regulators or the ESP32 chip, so it reads true room temperature.
  • Need a wider range or higher accuracy? Use the DHT22 instead.

Library Support

Use the DHT sensor library by Adafruit in the Arduino IDE. It works with Arduino, ESP32 and ESP8266. For ESPHome, use the built-in dht platform.

Applications of DHT11 Sensor

  • Home and local weather stations
  • Smart home climate monitoring
  • Automatic fan, AC and humidifier control
  • Greenhouse and plant monitoring
  • IoT and data-logging projects
  • Student and beginner electronics projects
